One of the most powerful things I did for my eczema and topical steroid withdrawal (TSW) healing didn't come from a jar.
It didn't come from a prescription.
It didn't come from a supplement.
It came from something God had already created.
The sun.
When my skin was at its worst, I was desperately searching for relief. Like many people navigating eczema or TSW, I spent countless hours researching products, ingredients, diets, supplements, and protocols. I was willing to try almost anything if it meant finding some comfort.
Yet one of the most impactful parts of my healing journey ended up being one of the simplest.
Stepping outside.
Feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin.
Taking a slow walk.
Breathing fresh air.
At first, I didn't think much of it. I certainly didn't expect sunlight to become something I intentionally prioritized. But over time, I began noticing that the days I spent outside often felt different. My body felt calmer. My mind felt clearer. My sleep improved. Even my outlook on healing shifted.
Looking back now, I believe daily sunlight became so important because it supported far more than my skin.
It supported my entire body.
And healing eczema and TSW is rarely just about the skin.

When healing feels complicated, simplicity matters
During TSW, life can become incredibly complicated.
You're tracking symptoms.
Researching treatments.
Trying to avoid triggers.
Managing discomfort.
Wondering when things will improve.
It's exhausting.
There were seasons when healing felt like a full-time job.
What I didn't realize at the time was that my body wasn't necessarily asking for more complexity. In many ways, it was asking me to reconnect with the foundational things it was designed to need.
Rest.
Nourishment.
Movement.
Fresh air.
Sunlight.
The simple things are often the first things we overlook, yet they're the things our bodies depend on most.
Sunlight supports more than vitamin D production
Most people know that sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D.
That's important because vitamin D plays a key role in immune regulation, inflammation, and skin health.
But what surprised me during my healing journey was realizing that sunlight influences so many other systems in the body as well.
Every morning, natural light sends signals to the brain that help regulate hormones, energy production, mood, sleep cycles, and immune function.
In other words, sunlight doesn't just affect one part of your body.
It helps coordinate many of the systems that need to work together for healing to occur.
When I began getting outside consistently, I felt less disconnected from my body and more connected to the natural rhythms it was created to follow.
Healing my nervous system was part of healing my skin
This was one of the biggest lessons I learned.
For years, I viewed my eczema as a skin problem.
But during TSW, I realized how connected everything truly is.
The constant itching.
The burning.
The sleepless nights.
The uncertainty.
The isolation.
All of it kept my nervous system in a state of chronic stress.
And stress itself can become fuel for inflammation.
It's a frustrating cycle.
Stress contributes to flares.
Flares create more stress.
The body never fully gets a chance to settle.
One of the most beautiful gifts sunlight gave me was an opportunity to interrupt that cycle.
When I stepped outside, I felt my shoulders relax.
I breathed deeper.
I noticed the trees, the breeze, the sounds around me instead of focusing solely on my discomfort.
For a few moments, my nervous system could stop fighting and start resting.
Those moments mattered more than I realized.
Because healing happens far more easily when the body feels safe than when it feels threatened.

Better days started with better sleep
One of the hardest parts of eczema and TSW is sleep deprivation.
I remember nights of scratching, discomfort, and exhaustion.
The lack of sleep affected everything.
My energy.
My emotions.
My ability to cope.
My skin's ability to repair.
What I learned is that sunlight plays a huge role in regulating our circadian rhythm—the internal clock that tells our body when to wake and when to rest.
When we expose ourselves to natural light during the day, especially in the morning, our bodies become better equipped to produce melatonin later at night.
That means deeper, more restorative sleep.
And sleep is where so much healing happens.
The body repairs tissues.
Balances hormones.
Regulates inflammation.
Supports immune function.
The more I prioritized sunlight, the more I noticed improvements in my sleep—and better sleep often seemed to support better skin days.
Movement, circulation, and supporting the body's natural detox pathways
Many of my sunlight sessions included a simple walk.
Nothing intense.
Just movement.
As I learned more about root-cause healing, I began understanding how important circulation and drainage pathways are.
Our bodies are constantly processing and eliminating waste through the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, digestive tract, and skin.
When those systems become overwhelmed, the body works incredibly hard to compensate.
Walking helps support circulation and lymphatic movement, encouraging these natural pathways to function as they were designed.
I often think back to how hard my body was working during TSW.
Not against me.
For me.
Everything it was doing was an attempt to protect me.
Sunlight and movement became ways of supporting that process rather than fighting it.
Sunlight reminded me of where my hope comes from
Perhaps the greatest gift sunlight gave me wasn't physical at all.
It was emotional.
Healing can feel incredibly isolating.
There were days when I felt discouraged, defeated, and exhausted from carrying the weight of it all.
But every time I stepped outside, I was reminded that there was still beauty around me.
The sun still rose.
The seasons still changed.
Life continued moving forward.
And somehow, that reminded me that healing was happening too—even when I couldn't fully see it yet.
Those daily walks became moments of prayer.
Moments of gratitude.
Moments where I could hand my worries over to God and simply be present.
They reminded me that I wasn't carrying this journey alone.
A gentle reminder for your healing journey
If you're navigating eczema, topical steroid withdrawal, or another chronic skin condition, I want to encourage you not to overlook the simple things.
Sometimes healing isn't found in doing more.
Sometimes it's found in returning to the foundations.
Sunlight.
Fresh air.
Movement.
Rest.
Connection.
Faith.
Your body was created with incredible wisdom.
It is working for you, not against you.
And while sunlight may not be a cure, it can be a powerful daily reminder that your body is designed to heal, restore, and move toward balance when given the support it needs.
For me, those few minutes outside each day became so much more than a walk.
They became part of my healing story.
And perhaps they can become part of yours too.
Keep courage.
